Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis and resulted in physical disability. Osteoarthritis are characterized by progressive degeneration of the articular cartilage, osteophytes, subchondral sclerosis and alterations of synovial membrane and joint capsules. Patients often report to have pain and stiffness around affected joint area, especially after prolonged activity. This eventually may results in joint deformities and significant functional impairment.

Most treatment available discuss more on symptomatically relief on pain and stiffness, be in pharmacologically or non-pharmacologically.

In pharmacologically approach, Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugsĀ  (NSAIDs) is most commonly the choice of pharmacological agents, and cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 inhibitor might be more specific in relieving the pain. Of course, acetaminophen or famously know as paracetamol (Panadol) could give certain degree of pain relief, is one of the agent that can alternate with NSAIDs or COX-2 inhibitor. In more severe cases, intra-articular injection of corticosteroids (steroid), viscosupplement (hyaluronic acid) or blood-derived product (Platelet Rich Plasma) directly into the joint space of a painful, inflamed arthritic joint.

In Non-pharmacologically approach, topical analgesic such as capsaicin and NSAIDs rubs to ameliorate the symptoms. Of course, over-the-counter supplement such as Glucosamine, Glucosamine-Chondroition combination, Type-II Collagen, Hyaluronic Acid and etc could a choice of treatment too.

Sometime, the treatment of pain relief is very much depends on the stages of osteoarthritis as shown in the diagram below.

If the knee pain is just started to disturb your daily life, pain is not so intense, frequency is on and off, glucosamine might be one of the good choice to supplement your knee.
